Take this information as a guide for how we would normally hang one of our hanging chairs or daybeds.
This may not be suitable in some circumstances and your builder may suggest another way.
Consider Your Roof Strength
Check and ensure the structural strength of the timber roof structure is sufficient to suspend the daybed or swing chair with a swing load weight of around 500kgs. If the structure is not adequate, then additional beams or support may be required to be installed. If in doubt consult with licensed builder or carpenter. NOTE: It is suggested to allow for a minimum of 400mm swing room at the rear of the swing to any wall structures.
Mark Out Hanging Points
Allow for approximately 40mm greater width, than the actual width of the daybed or swing. For example if your hanging chair is 1500mm in length, then allow of 1540mm width between hanging points. Please refer to our Product Spec Sheet for full hanging measurements.
As some of the daybeds are 4-point hanging, you will need to mark out the 4 points on the roof as to where it will hang.
A couple of key measurements:
Off a back wall- min 500mm
From a side wall- min 300mm
Hanging height- up to you what you prefer, however we’d generally say about 500mm from the ground is comfortable height to get on and off from.
Install Eye Nuts Into To Roof
Use M12 Eye nuts
Drill a 12mm hole through centre of your roof beam. The beam should be a minimum of 45mm wide.
Install the 12mm threaded rod through the hole drilled.
Place 12mm washer (square or round) on top of beam onto the threaded rod.
Use 2 x M12 nuts and add a thread lock compound on top of washer.
Add the M12 eye nut on bottom of timber beam, and also add thread lock compound.
NOTE: Check fixtures annually and if required tighten them!
Eyescrews may also be an option at this point. Use the longest thread length suitable for your beam. Screw the eyescrew in a slight angle to reduce any downward lag.
Clip On The Carabiner (2-point hanging)
Now that you have installed the eye nuts into the roof, clip one carabiner onto each of the eye nuts.
Let the ropes hang down and pass through eye bolts that are on the base of the chair.
Prop the swing on something that is approximately 500mm in height (ie a small table / 2 chairs etc), so that you can get the right height for your swing.
NOTE: When you first sit on the swing / day bed the ropes will stretch to a final position, as such, allow for the position to be approximately 50mm higher than anticipated.
Or
Use Split Links (4-point hanging)
Use the split link through one link of the chain and clip it onto the eyebolt. Thread the chain through the spliced part of the rope.
Place the other end of the link chain on the other end of the split link.
These links are used to adjust the height and tilt of your hanging daybed.
Get The Right Tilt
For a Hanging Chair- Allow the back of the swing to be slightly lower than the front of your swing.
Whatever you have the swing resting on, allow the front edge of it to sit slightly higher than the back. This slight tilt will make getting on and off the swing easier and allow for a better back resting position.
For a hanging Daybed- We’d recommend having the bed level from side-to-side and back-to-front.
Once you have the right height then tighten up the bolts on the rope clamps at the base of the swing.
Wrap/ knot the remainder of the rope around the clamp and remove the temporary support. The rope at the base of the hanging chair is purely for aesthetic purposes. The weight is supported by the clamps.
The knots at the base of the 4-point hanging daybeds are more substantial and can hold the weight of the swing.
See here for an example of how to do a locking knot.
NOTE: When you first sit on the swing/day bed the ropes will stretch to a final position.
This is the best bit!
Once all the hard work is done, sit back, relax, and grab a drink to celebrate.
